I’ll be the first to admit that Virginia has some of the prettiest skies I’ve ever seen.
When I first moved to Ohio in March, it was still cold, bare and it all looked kind of grim.
One morning I woke up really early while it was still dark out and as I was driving, I watched the sun come out from the bottom of the trees, making a beautiful tapestry of colors.
“Wow God! That is a beautiful sky! The only nice one I’ve seen here”.
To which He replied with, “Ohio has many beautiful skies. Have you been awake to see it?”
In that moment, I felt as though He was both referring to me literally being awake to catch a glimpse of the sunrises but also challenging me to see where in my life I’d been “asleep” to what God was doing.
I think in the Western world, it is aggressively common for busyness to stroke our ego, for our minds to be attacked with millions of distractions simultaneously and for consumerism to have us focusing on what we lack.
We so easily (and pridefully) get lost in the day to day motions of life with our self proclaimed important to-do lists,
We squander time on mindless things,
And where gratitude should reign,
We ignorantly complain about what we are owed.
The constant noise and lack of stillness makes it so that we don’t even recognize the small details God is penning for us. How easily it is to fall into a zombie like slumber, walking around asleep.
It requires daily, stubborn intentionality and resiliency to carry an awareness of the story that God is walking us through.
Grittiness grows gratitude.
Stillness strengthens spirituality.
Willingness awakens wonder.
I have since that pavement sunrise experienced many beautiful skies in the land of Ohio. 🌅
