Being told, "You two are lucky", is something I just don't resonate with, truthfully.
Typically, you're used to hearing the quintessential 'happily ever afters' on your wedding day, but someone very special to us told us something to us on ours that just stuck.
She told us to fight every single day.
There was a pause and we both looked bewildered, I'm sure.
"Fight every single day. Fight for your marriage. Fight for each other. Every single day."
At surface level, on your wedding day, drunk with bliss and elation, it's easy to quickly agree with those words.
But in the middle of a hard time or maybe even just the temptation of giving into complacency, it could be easier to just... not. I get it.
However, I'm learning that you can't have the good without the messy. And from the beginning, we agreed that didn't want a mediocre marriage, we wanted an exceptional one.
Our marriage is second to God and nothing else, we dive al in when those uncomfortable conversations have to happen, no one goes to sleep angry or hurt, we challenge each other when necessary, we tease one another to the point of laughter and keep our love meters filled up!
Nothing about our marriage is perfect but we are intentional in creating one we love and protecting it tooth and nail.
So if you see us engaging like giddy children, taking each other by the hand, and soaking up an amazing marriage- it isn't because we are lucky.
it's work, grit, love and God that's gradually been building this.
We laugh, we play, we fight.
A daily deliberate decision.
"Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves."
