In México, we have a saying,
“No soy monedita de oro para caerles bien a todos.
No soy monedita de oro y me vale que no me quieran.”
Which translates to:
“I'm not a gold coin to be liked by everyone.
I'm not a gold coin and I don’t care if they don’t like me.”
(It’s actually a song😏)
For some reason there exists the notion amongst believers and many others that for us to be “loving” and Christ- like, we need to be all accepting, allow the truth to be relative, always remain agreeable, and be careful not to offend anyone.
But can I tell you- The gospel IS offensive.
If it is to save souls, if it is to rattle hell and give heaven a reason to celebrate, it MUST be.
Jesus was an example of this many times when He was on earth.
On one occasion, Matthew tells us that some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus asking Him questions. He not only answered their questions but also called them “hypocrites”.
“Then the disciples came to him and asked, ‘Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?’.”
(Matthew 15:12 NIV)
What happened after He knew His words had offended these people?
“Jesus shrugged it off. ‘Every tree that wasn’t planted by my Father in heaven will be pulled up by its roots. Forget them. They are blind men leading blind men. When a blind man leads a blind man, they both end up in the ditch’.” (Matthew 15:13-14 MSG)
He shrugged it off.
He shrugged it off and then went on to say to ‘keep it moving’.
My first thoughts after reading these verses?
What. A. Savage.
But the Bible says Jesus is God in the flesh and if we are to believe that then we are also to believe when it says that God is love.
There has never existed a moment in which He has stopped being “Love”.
Which means He was being loving in stating truth and not being concerned with others being offended by Him or not.
Truth=Love
We need to be a resilient, gritty, ‘gold-coin’ kind of people if we are to do this right.
